The Health Decode Framework

Core Idea: Health claims are notoriously difficult to evaluate because the information ecosystem is systematically corrupted by funding bias, regulatory capture, and economic misalignment. But corruption has structure, and structure can be scored. This framework provides a systematic protocol: for any health claim, apply the corruption filter (who profits if this is true?), assess evidence quality (how many independent inference paths converge?), and check evolutionary coherence (does this align with what humans did for millions of years?). Total the scores. What survives all three filters is probably true. What fails them is probably corrupted.

Eggs are dangerous. Then they are fine. Fat is the enemy. Then sugar is the enemy. Then it is seed oils, or lectins, or nightshade vegetables. Every claim arrives with "studies show" attached. The studies contradict each other. The experts disagree publicly and vehemently. A new headline reverses last year's headline. We stand in a grocery store aisle, unable to determine whether the thing in our hand is food or slow poison. This paralysis is not an accident. It is the predictable output of an information system where the entities funding the research have financial stakes in the conclusions. But the corruption has structure. And structure can be scored.

How to Use This Framework

For any health claim—"X is good for you," "Y causes Z," "take more of W"—run it through three filters and score each dimension. The total provides a calibrated confidence level. This will not tell us the absolute truth (nothing can). But it will tell us how much confidence to place in the claim, given the structural forces acting on the information. Think of it as a corruption-adjusted confidence score—a way to separate signal from noise when the noise is not random but systematically generated to serve specific interests.

Part 1: The Corruption Filter

Score range: −6 to +6

The corruption filter asks three questions about the incentive landscape surrounding a claim. It does not ask whether the claim is true. It asks whether the information environment is trustworthy enough for truth to survive.

1.1 Funding Analysis: Who profits if this claim is true? If no one gets rich when the claim is believed, that is a good sign (+2). Mixed financial interests score neutral (0). If a powerful industry stands to profit directly from wide acceptance of the claim, that is a warning sign (−2). The question is not whether profit automatically invalidates a finding. The question is whether profit creates selection pressure on what gets studied, published, and promoted.

1.2 Research Independence: Who funded the studies? Primarily independent research earns (+2). Mixed funding sources score (0). Primarily industry-funded research scores (−2). This matters because industry-funded studies are significantly more likely to reach conclusions favorable to the funder—not necessarily through fraud, but through subtler mechanisms like study design choices, outcome selection, and publication decisions.

1.3 Recommendation Stability: How much have the recommendations changed? Consistent recommendations across decades earn (+2). Some variation around a stable trend scores (0). Major flip-flops—where the official guidance reversed direction—score (−2). Flip-flopping is a signal that the evidence base was never strong enough to support the original recommendation, or that external forces (industry pressure, political shifts) are driving the guidance rather than accumulating evidence.

Part 2: Evidence Quality

Score range: −5 to +9

Evidence quality asks how strong the actual research support is, independent of the corruption landscape. A claim can survive the corruption filter but still rest on weak evidence. Both filters matter.

2.1 Path Multiplication: How many independent inference paths reach the same conclusion? This is perhaps the single most powerful indicator. If randomized controlled trials, observational epidemiology, mechanistic biology, and population studies all point the same direction, that convergence is extremely difficult to fake. Four or more independent paths earn (+3). Three earn (+2). Two earn (+1). A single path, no matter how impressive, earns (−1)—because single paths are vulnerable to systematic errors that convergent paths are not.

2.2 Mechanism Clarity: Is there a plausible biological pathway? A clear, well-understood mechanism (+2) means we can explain how X causes Y at the molecular or physiological level. A plausible but incomplete mechanism (+1) is still valuable. No clear mechanism (0) is a yellow flag. And if the proposed effect actively contradicts known biology (−2), skepticism is strongly warranted.

2.3 Replication Status: Do the findings replicate? Consistently replicated results (+2) are the gold standard. Mostly replicating (+1) is still encouraging. Mixed replication (0) means the signal may be weak or context-dependent. Failed replications (−1) suggest the original finding may have been noise, fraud, or an artifact of specific experimental conditions.

2.4 Time Horizon: How long has the evidence been accumulating? Long-term data spanning decades (+2) is far more informative for chronic health outcomes than short-term studies. Medium-term evidence of one to five years (+1) is useful but limited. Short-term evidence only (0) or acute effects only (−1) cannot tell us what we most need to know about things we consume daily for a lifetime.

Part 3: Evolutionary Coherence

Score range: −4 to +4

Evolutionary coherence asks whether a claim fits what we know about human evolutionary history. This is not an appeal to nature—it is a recognition that our biology was shaped by millions of years of specific environmental conditions, and that substances or practices far outside those conditions carry higher uncertainty by default.

3.1 Ancestral Exposure: How long have humans been exposed to this substance or practice? Millions of years of exposure (+2) means our biology has had time to adapt. Thousands of years (+1) represents meaningful but shorter co-evolution. Hundreds of years (0) is ambiguous. Mere decades (−1) means we are running an uncontrolled experiment on ourselves. And if the substance never existed in nature at all (−2), we have zero evolutionary data on long-term effects.

3.2 Population Data: What do traditional populations show? If traditional populations with long-term exposure to a substance or practice demonstrate good health outcomes (+2), that is strong signal. Mixed evidence across populations (0) is unclear. No traditional population data (−1) means we lack this entire evidence category. And if populations adopting the substance show measurably worse outcomes (−2), that is powerful negative evidence.

Scoring and Interpretation

Total = Corruption Filter + Evidence Quality + Evolutionary Coherence. The possible range is −15 to +19.

  • +12 or higher: High confidence. The claim has survived corruption pressure, is supported by strong convergent evidence, and fits evolutionary patterns. Probably true.
  • +6 to +11: Medium confidence. The claim is probably true but has some vulnerability—perhaps modest corruption risk or incomplete evidence paths.
  • 0 to +5: Low confidence. The claim is unclear. It may be true, but the evidence is insufficient to distinguish signal from noise given the corruption landscape.
  • −5 to −1: Very low confidence. Active skepticism is warranted. The corruption risk is high, the evidence is weak, or both.
  • −6 or lower: Likely false or corrupted. The combination of high corruption pressure, weak evidence, and evolutionary mismatch suggests the claim does not reflect reality.

Worked Example: Sleep

Let us test the framework on something we can calibrate against. Claim: "Adequate sleep is essential for health."

Corruption Filter: No one profits from us sleeping more (+2). Research is overwhelmingly independent, not industry-funded (+2). Recommendations have been stable for decades (+2). Subtotal: +6.

Evidence Quality: Overwhelming independent paths—cardiovascular research, immune function, cognitive science, metabolic studies, and more (+3). Mechanisms are crystal clear at molecular, cellular, and systems levels (+2). Universal replication across populations, age groups, and methodologies (+2). Decades of longitudinal data (+2). Subtotal: +9.

Evolutionary Coherence: Every animal with a nervous system sleeps—millions of years of exposure (+2). Every known human population sleeps, and sleep deprivation universally produces harm (+2). Subtotal: +4.

Total: +19. Maximum possible score. The framework correctly identifies sleep as one of the highest-confidence health claims available. This is what calibration looks like—the framework should give maximum confidence to things we already know are true, and it does.

Limitations

This framework is a tool, not a truth machine. It structures thinking but does not replace it. Edge cases exist—some genuine medical breakthroughs involve novel compounds with no evolutionary precedent and industry funding. Individual variation matters—population-level data does not always predict individual response. The framework is designed for orientation, not final judgment. Use it to calibrate confidence, not to avoid thinking.
