Ideological Capture
Academia has a measurable political skew. Faculty in the social sciences and humanities are far more politically homogeneous than the general population. This is not conspiracy—it's the predictable result of several reinforcing mechanisms.
Self-selection plays a role: academic careers—low pay, high autonomy, intellectual orientation—appeal more to certain personality types and political dispositions. Hiring bias amplifies the skew: homogeneous departments hire people who share their assumptions, often without conscious intent. Social pressure enforces the consensus: dissenting from prevailing views carries career costs, from chilly collegiality to difficulty publishing to being passed over for tenure. And publication bias closes the loop: research that supports the consensus publishes more easily than research that challenges it.

Teaching as Afterthought

Teaching loads are seen as burdens that reduce research time. Teaching quality isn't meaningfully rewarded in tenure decisions—a mediocre researcher who teaches brilliantly will lose the tenure race to a brilliant researcher who teaches mediocrely, every time. Graduate students and adjuncts do most undergraduate teaching, often with minimal training and minimal pay. Students pay more and more for an educational experience that is increasingly delivered by the institution's least-resourced, least-supported members. The full professor's name is on the course catalog. The adjunct making $3,000 per course is in the classroom.
The Administrative Bloat
Administrator-to-student ratios have exploded over the past four decades. Between 1975 and 2015, the number of administrators at U.S. colleges grew by more than 200 percent, while the number of full-time faculty grew by roughly 50 percent. The administrative layer now consumes a substantial fraction of institutional budgets.
The drivers are multiple: regulatory compliance requirements that expand continuously, student services that proliferate, diversity and equity offices, marketing and recruitment departments, technology administration, and the empire-building that is natural to any bureaucracy. Academia's stated mission is knowledge production and transmission. Its actual incentive structure rewards publications, citations, grants, rankings, and enrollment.
